Chris Lee-Thompson (Lama Dawa Norbu) embodies a unique blend of pastoral care and Buddhist wisdom. For over 35 years, Chris served as a Lutheran pastor, providing spiritual guidance across diverse communities. His journey into meditation began over 20 years ago, leading him to teach mindfulness in state prisons, churches, and hospitals, where he witnessed the profound impact of these practices on people from all walks of life. As a hospital night chaplain, Chris deepened his understanding of the human experience, offering comfort during times of crisis.
Dawa Norbu’s transition from pastor to Lama reflects his evolving spiritual path, integrating the compassionate care of his Christian roots with the profound insights of Buddhism. A founding member of the Wisconsin Prison Mindfulness Initiative, Dawa Norbu has been instrumental in bringing mindfulness practices to incarcerated individuals, aiding their journey toward peace and self-awareness.
In 2021, Dawa Norbu was ordained as a Buddhist Ngakphang and is currently a lama trainee under the mentorship of Domo Geshe Rinpoche, further deepening his commitment to Buddhist teachings. His training as a spiritual director at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Guidance complements his work as an author, musician, and storyteller.
A gifted storyteller, Dawa Norbu has earned a Master of Sacred Storytelling certificate, which complements his work as an author and musician. His children’s book, “A Day of Lovingkindness,” and his contributions to the interfaith essay collection “Finding Rest for Our Souls” showcase his dedication to spreading messages of compassion and refuge. Additionally, Dawa Norbu’s song about the Farm Crisis, “Shoulder to Shoulder,” was recorded by a professional folksinger, demonstrating his ability to touch hearts through music.
Now based in the Pacific Northwest, Lama Dawa Norbu continues to guide others, blending Western and Eastern spiritual traditions to foster healing and transformation in individuals and communities alike.
Dawa Norbu’s work is a testament to the power of storytelling, mindfulness, and spiritual guidance in fostering healing and transformation in individuals and communities alike.
