Lhakpa (Mike Fernette) began his journey into meditation and dharma studies in 1974, developing a dedicated and consistent practice over the decades. His spiritual path has been deeply intertwined with his personal journey of recovery from addiction, for which he remains profoundly grateful. Lhakpa’s commitment to helping others on similar paths led him to a 28-year career as a clinical substance abuse counselor, a role in which he provided guidance and support to countless individuals seeking recovery. He retired from this work in 2021 but continues to serve his community in meaningful ways.
As a skilled carpenter, Lhakpa expresses his creativity and craftsmanship through woodworking, a passion that complements his love for nature. His current interests include gardening and caring for the land in the Driftless area of southwest Wisconsin, where he finds peace and connection with the natural world.
Lhakpa’s dedication to mindfulness and recovery extends beyond his personal practice. He is an active group facilitator with the Wisconsin Prison Mindfulness Initiative, where he plays a key role in bringing mindfulness practices to incarcerated individuals. Additionally, he leads Mindfulness & Recovery groups in the county jail, offering those in challenging circumstances a path toward healing and self-awareness.
Lhakpa’s life is a testament to the power of consistent spiritual practice, compassionate service, and the healing potential of nature. Through his work and personal endeavors, he continues to make a positive impact on those around him, fostering growth and recovery in both himself and others.
